"I'd never heard of the Microscopic Septet until 2008, but it only took one listen to a downloaded song to buy the CD. The Septet swings, and they play tight. At times they sound reminiscent of the World Saxophone Quartet (with a full rhythm section) or the Vandermark 5, but they stick with swinging more than those groups. The songs also have a fair amount of humor, especially "Money Money Money". This is simply a well-played, fun disc, and is one of the best of 2008. I highly recommend it."

"Until the Microscopic Quartet (best known to fans as "the Micros") reissued all their 80s and early 90s albums last year, I only knew one number of theirs. I hear it every day as the theme for NPR's "Fresh Air with Terry Gross". But after hearing some of the re-issues - and seeing them in a rare live appearance (they live all over the globe now) - I was hooked.
I'm not even sure how you describe their music. Well it is "jazz" -and they are filed under jazz in music stores - but there are some blues #s, some "cartoon music" (think Carl Stalling) and big band as well. And sometimes all this occurs in the same song! The lead track, "Night Train Express" - the only number not composed by either Micro member Phillip Johnston (who recently scored the soundtrack for the feature film "Noise") or fellow member Joel Forrester - has the melody of the classic "Midnight Special" running through it. It was composed by jazz pianist Wayne Horvitz - whose name was new to me.
Two of the 11 tracks exceed nine minutes in length and wander through genres. "Money Money Money", composed by pianist Forrester), starts off "funky" and then moves to bebop before briefly turning atonal and then back to funk. With four of the eight members of the group playing saxophone (a true sax quartet) there's lotsof fancy solo and group reed work. Add a bass, drums and Forrester on piano and you have a band that loves to entertain and, while serious in ability, plays their music for FUN!
This new CD is their first NEW recording in 20 years. I hope they don't wait another 20 years for the next one!
