CD Reviews

Best of Mickey's "live" recordings.

"I can only imagine the reason no one else has reviewed this album to date is due to the fact that all of the songs on it were previously released. And I must admit that that fact kept me from purchasing it for some time. Disappointed for the most part with "Nights When I Am Sane", which offered up 4 new songs (at the time) and in my opinion the best "cover/booklet" of any of the Newbury packages (yet seemed like Mickey was dealing with some demons) there didn't appear to be much reason to acquire "Live In England". But opening with "Angeline", one of my all-time favorite Newbury songs (but, then, what isn't)showed how beautiful a performance this collection was to be. And to top it all off, the ending of "San Francisco Mabel Joy" is just as powerful as the Choir of Angels on "Looks Like Rain". To think that it's only one voice. Highly recommended, but I can say the same for every album by Mickey Newbury."
Beautiful Live Newbury

"If you are looking for the beautiful side of the wonderful Mickey Newbury live, then this is the recording to get as opposed to the doctored up Winter Winds. Just Mickey and his guitar on tour with Don Williams. So soft and quiet you could hear a pin drop. Lovely renditions of many Newbury favorites. Even though Mickey can be heard wheezing a bit between songs, a rather sobering thing considering his fate, he is in fine voice throughout this recording.

My only small complaint would be that this CD was not EQed properly, so when you get the volume adjusted properly for quiet songs like "Song Of Sorrow", the songs with the stronger vocals like " His Eye Is On The Sparrow" ( which is next) come across far too loud. A minor complaint as this is a fine, and entirely beautiful live recording, and a completely worthwhile purchase even if you own other live Newbury recordings."
