CD Reviews

Superb Dulcimer Sound
denny-g | Port Huron, Michigan United States | 12/09/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Mick Doherty is a musical genius at the Hammered Dulcimer, and his skills are never more apparant than on "Old Time Hammer Dulcimer Favorites." This CD captures the unique-sound of the Hammered Dulcimer, as the lead instrument, instead of it being a background supporting instrument. It is a CD for those persons who enjoy relaxing, meditative, instrumental, or American and Celtic folk music. What I enjoy most about the CD is Mick Doherty's master ability to bring traditional folk to the 21st Century. The CD improves each time I listen to it, and has an ability to just grow on you. The clarity by which the Hammered Dulcimer comes through is amazing. I give it five(5) stars!"
Energetic and infectious!

"Mick plays hammer dulcimer with a delightful abandon that fills the room with his warm and open personality. While his live performances are absolutely the way to go, this album lets those of you who don't live near Portland, Oregon get a taste of his music. I have been a fan of Mick for twenty years now, and I still see him every chance I get. He is a gem, and you cannot hear him without cracking your face into a grin. This album is traditional tunes, yet they feel fresh and catchy."
Not bad

"Honestly, these are nice tunes played with decent skill. But I don't hear anything unique or exciting in Mick's phrasing, dynamics etc. If you listen to him playing "Red Wing" for example, and then compare (yeh I know) McCutcheon there's a vast world of difference in feeling, subtlety, articulation. This album left me wanting."
