CD Reviews

A hidden treasure of music and poetry!
Penumbra | Atlanta, GA USA | 07/31/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is a delightful CD of romantic music, poetry and prose. The reader is a charming young British actor, Michael Sheen.

The only part of this cd that is disappointing is the liner notes which do not give sufficient details. About half the material is undocumented so, unless you're already familiar with these pieces you're at a loss. The lack of documentation is most keenly felt with the beautiful musical selections, in my opinion. I would love to know what some of these works are and who is performing them. On the other hand, anonymous beauty is better than none at all.

This is a very special cd. I think it would greatly appeal to people who enjoy listening to recordings of poetry. The readings are far more expressive than what you usually find in recorded poetry collections.

As the title suggests, this is a terrific gift for a sweetheart. Don't be put off by the low price of the cd, what it contains is work of the highest quality! I've just ordered the companion cd (From Her to Him) and hope it is as good as this one!"
Beautiful poetry and prose

"I never really heard poetry being read before, except occasionally, long ago, by indifferent schoolteachers. After listening to this CD, I find myself amazed by how little I really know about poets and poetry. Listening to Michael Sheen's voice, with its slight burr, is a pleasure. I particularly love his rendition of Tennyson's "Summer Night", and Robbie Burns' "My Luv's Like a Red, Red Rose".

And it's not all poetry. There's the heartbreaking (remembering that he was killed in WWI) letter from Raymond Asquith to his fiancee. Karl Marx's letter to his wife...The prose excerpts from "Persuasion" and "Jane Eyre". What unexpected beauty this CD has provided.

I read a professional review of this CD and the reviewer called it "schmaltzy", which I think is an insult. It's romantic, yes, but not weak or melodramatic. I recommend this CD highly.
