CD Reviews

Sublime music
Enrique Torres | San Diegotitlan, Califas | 12/29/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is a beautiful disc from 1990 that also features Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmore and old slow hand himself Eric Clapton. Michael Kamen, also known for his orchestral work behind the Pink Floyd mega-hit CD "The Wall" died prematurely from MS but left behind several important works including this disc featuring the melodic saxophone of David Sanborn behind the National Philharmonic Orchestra. The result is vibrant saxophone and lush orchestration that leaves you exhausted and exhaulted after listening. The "Concierto" in three movments is spectacular and one of those beautiful compositions that can be listened to year after year and you always seem to get something new out of the music. "Sasha" is a song that features David Gilmore on guitar and Sanborn on sax which is sublime and sounds very much like a Pink Floyd song without lyrics. "Sandra" features Eric Clapton on guitar solo in the interlude while Sanborn's sax takes a brief back seat before again exchanging riffs. This is a sort of hybrid disc that is just as much jazz as it is classical and the result is stunning. This CD is highly recommended."
Outstanding work

"Kamen was a trully gifted musician and this is reflected in this 1991 concerto he wrote for his friend David Sanborn. A must fan for all Michael Kamen fans."
The Pinnacle of Crossover Music
Frank Di Marco | Münchingen | 12/31/2008

"Crossover in this sense is the mixture of pop with classical music. Michael Kamen has left an incredible piece of music that seems to be eternally fresh. Every once in while, when I stand in front of my CD collection, especially in the sombre days of the ending year - just as today - I pick up this Concerto and fall into the depths of this masterpiece. The three movements of the concerto show me a realm of sound, solitude and beauty. The Sound of the saxophon is overwhelming and the recording is outstanding regarding the time of production, 1990. The musisicians are a who's who of those days, Eric Clapton, David Gilmour and Pino Palladino. The music is haunting and never lets you go. In no other work of is too short life achieved Kamen such a dephth and densitiy. No Soundtrack is as brilliant as this music - music for its own sake!"
