CD Reviews

Great new mellow rock with Rocky Mountain heart and soul

"REVIEWCheck Out Michael John's Mellow New Rocky Mountain RockI bought this CD as soon as I heard it had hit the market. It was the first recording by a Colorado-based song writer, singer and band leader I'd heard live twice in some cool and low down bars in the mountains near Boulder, Colorado. What can I say? This is some very strong new music with great lyrics backed by original and fresh arrangements and smooth rythmns. But best of all are the stories built into the distinctive melody lines. These are songs from the heart with a unique blend of street wise and mountain high feelings running deep through the music and John's expressive lyrics. My favorite cuts are Due for a Change, Baby Can't Help It, The Kiss of Death, and Simple Time.Baby Can't Help It has a really catchy verse and melody that make me want get up and dance with my woman to the sultry music. What exactly is it that "baby can't help?" Just born to be beautiful!Due for a Change shows another side of this versatile writer's musical leanings... a touch of jazz-rock with hints of early Steely Dan chord progressions and harmonies. Check out the soulful guitar solo interim in this one...very sweet playing by Tim Kobza! The Kiss of Death has some super-cool attitude and memorable rhythm and base lines driving under a tough story about some nasty times going on out there.Simple Time has some free flowing island feelings with waves of Jamaican and Caribbean steel drums carrying you along.I hope this excellent player and his band start to take off. They deserve it!Gary E. Moore Boulder, Colorado 8/12/99"
