"My exposure to `new music' is not particularly broad, but it is sufficient enough for me to have developed a general skepticism about most work that is touted as `new' or `original'. Michael Hersch's music is in a completely different league than much of the new music that I have been exposed to, and it is also like nothing that I have ever heard before. While one senses echoes, in his work, of Bach, Bartok, Mahler, Shostakovich, among others, Hersch has created an oeuvre that is entirely new and entirely his own. Original, experimental, innovative, all such words apply to his music. But while most other work that is given these appellations suffers from the limitations and claustrophobia imposed by the clever ingenuities of the work, Hersch's music absorbs and transcends innovation to tie back into something deeper and more primordial that is shared with all great music of the past: namely, depth of feeling. Through dense, cellular compositions that range from fleeting glimpses of painful, partially or near melodic, moments to visceral and explosive passages that confront one with a ferocity that is virtually unrivalled in my listening experience, Hersch creates a world that is dark, shattered and torn but, simultaneously, profoundly beautiful, nostalgic and meaningful. I highly recommend any Michael Hersch recording that one can get one's hands on, particularly Marin Alsop's recording of the first two symphonies and The Vanishing Pavilions, Hersch's two hour long epic and completely unparalleled piano piece from 2007."
