"This may just be the album to get for the post-9/11 world. Newcomer Michael Carpenter put out his debut album "Baby" in September of 1999 before his scheduled wedding date in February of 2000. In a burst of refreshing joy, excitement, and thankfulness for his good fortunes both present and future, he put together this album "Hopefulness" during those in-between months. It seems gloom, doom, and pessimism have been very popular themes for the last decade or so in the musical world. Mike's title choice says it all. This album just bursts forth with, well, hopefulness for a continuing brighter future. And it works! But what does it sound like? Fortunately, it has it's own distinctive sound. There is a notable feel of the early 1960s pop sound akin to the Beach Boys or early Beatles. Elements of the Breeders, Smashing Pumpkins, Del Amitri, and Matthew Sweet appear mixed in at points but, do not dominate. Maybe even a little bit of Jackson Browne when Jackson is in a good mood! Mike's vocal style even has hints of Neal Casal, particularly on the pseudo alt-country "Is This Love I'm Feeling?". This album is truly Mike's creation, though, as he played the 6 and 12 string guitars, Rickenbacker bass, drums, tambourine, harmonica, piano, and organ on most all the songs while also doing the lead and backing vocals! Sounds like Tony Carey and Planet P, eh?!Overall, I heartily recommend this album, unless you don't particularly enjoy being put into a good, positive mood without being "dumbed down". It may have been recorded before 9/11 but, it's the perfect pick-me-up for these healing and rebuilding days."
