CD Reviews

My absolute favorite merzbow album hands down

"If you don't know Merzbow's name already, then this probably isn't the right album for you. This is noise. Not "loud rock and roll noise." Literally the genre noise. For previous Merzbow fans, this is by far one of his best, and kicks off his series of Merz- albums on Important records.

The tracks all feature beats (though not like any other electronic beat-based music I've ever heard). Totally mesmerizing. They suck me in. I love the abrasion, and yet it's not harsh like his other albums. I'd say this sounds more different from any of his other albums. And as you probably know, he has over 200 albums and is trying to release more albums than anyone else ever. (I think his goal is over 1000 albums).

Each track on the CD sounds totally different. Gorgeous. If I want to go into a trance, this is what I listen to. Merzbow is the Miles Davis of Japanese noise. There, I've said it.

There is a hidden track on here. A remix of Amlux (one of his classic albums in recent years) by Jack Dangers of Meat Beat Manifesto.

If you like noise, if you like Merzbow, or even if you want to try a totally different style of sound/music/listening experience, you should get this album.

"If you are new to Merzbow, this might or might not be a good place to start. I mean, there's no real "easy" way to get into Merzbow. It's not like you start off with the tamer stuff and then work up to the more difficult albums. You are essentially, with any release, thrown off the deep end into a sea of static, noise, rising and falling pulses of sound, screeches, the occasional throwaway beat, but face it: Its noise. And unlike "powernoise" bands like Converter (who I like) Merzbow isn't afraid to assault you for sometimes 40+ minutes without any hint of a beat, nothing to tether you. I recommend listening to this music on headphones. Its great music to write to. Its interesting to me when I find myself nodding along to something that just isn't melodic at all, its an obvious example of the brain's attempt to impose order upon practically everything. Great album. A bit more melodic than your usual Merzbow, but I just listened to this after listening to "Pornoise Vol 1," which is pretty harsh."
