This is undoubtedly the most successful oratorio composed since Handel's Messiah, and for a long time in mid-19th-century England, where Mendelssohn had conducted the first performances, it was even more popular than Messiah. It has lost some of that popularity, along with the oratorio form generally, in our less reverent time, but opera-lovers can appreciate the dramatic treatment of the life of the prophet--summoning the people to righteousness, performing miracles, struggling against idol-worshippers, confronting the wicked queen Jezebel, and finally rising to heaven in a fiery chariot. This recording has not been properly appreciated in English-speaking countries, probably because it uses a German text rather than the familiar English, and Philips does not help by its failure to provide a text or translation. But the performance is very dramatic; the singing is generally excellent, particularly from Ameling and Schreier (Adam has a few small problems); and the price is attractive. --Joe McLellan

CD Reviews

A superlative recording, especially the choruses
12/15/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I don't like Mendelssohn's Elijah very much (too Victorian for me), but this recording deserves five stars. The choruses sound much better in the original German, and the Leipzig chorus is awesome. Sawallisch conducts brilliantly, and the recorded sound is warm and well-captured. While I would recommend buying Handel's oratorios before coming here, Elijah certainly has its great moments."
Powerful, expressive, captures all the drama

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Sawallisch does a phenomenal job with the Gewandhaus Orchestra, starting with solid bass lines, all the counterpoint articulated precisely. The music is very expressive. Unlike some performances focusing on choral technique, this one captures all the drama of the biblical story of Elijah. The cast of soloists (Ameling, Krahmer, Burmeister, Schreier, Rotzsch, and Adam) all handle their roles very well. One example of great drama comes on Track 17 "Ist nicht mein Wort wie ein Feuer" (Is not my Word like a fire). Also dramatic is the section where Elijah stands at the mountain with the wind, fire, and earthquake. The final chorus shines forth the glory of God. The only disappointment is that this recording does not include the libretto, either German or English (this recording is sung in German)."

"Dentro de las pocas grabaciones que existen de esta obra, esta es probablemente una de esas que se acostumbrar llamar como "de referencia". Excelente la interpretación del barítono "Elías" y en general lo solistas La orquesta emociona e impacta en todo momento. Unico detalle, en algunos momentos la cuerda de sopranos se pierde un poco."
