Synopsis

Product Description
In 1950, Shostakovich went to Leipzig to attend the Bicentennial Bach competition. His admiration for Tatiana Nikolaeva s performance of the Well-Tempered Clavier served as an impetus to write his own set of Twenty-Four
Preludes and Fugues, loosely modeled on Bach s. Over the years, Nikolaeva, who performed the composition frequently throughout her career, became practically synonymous with the work. Alexander Melnikov started from scratch and came up with his own, unique and eminently musical interpretation. The third disc in the set is a DualDisc with a DVD side featuring a short film by Christian Leblé about the Preludes & Fugues that includes interviews with Alexander Melnikov and Andreas Staier.

CD Reviews

Great music, but beware of the troublesome "bonus" disc 3 -
Kari | VA USA | 08/13/2010
(3 out of 5 stars)

"This is a great performance, which this music fan would rate as a 5-star performance. I had great technical problems with disc 3. What's called a bonus DVD spoils this set for me and my 3-star rating is a generous rating. To save space and/or money and/or to make more money, disc 3 is a dual disc which contains on its a CD side two musical performances (prelude and fugue no. 24 which did not fit on disc 2) and on its DVD side an interview with Melnikov. (1) The CD side of this dual disc does not play on my current equipment (blu-ray players and computers). However it plays on my old DVD player. (2) Returning stuff is a hassle and I decided to buy the two missing musical pieces as MP3 downloads from Amazon to burn into a regular CD (what disc 3 could have been) and to put on my iPod. That digital purchase did not go without difficulty as clicking on what Amazon labels "continue" actually confirms purchase and by mistake a got one item from disc 1 I did not want as I already had it. At $0.99 not a big deal but added to the overall frustration. (3) The DVD side of this dual disc does not play on my blu-ray players. It plays on one of my two computers, but without a sound - not really useful as it is an interview. However it plays on my old DVD player, with sound, so I could watch it (and can watch again as long as the old DVD player is still around). Overall quite frustrating - so please buy this set only if you are ready to possibly having to deal with similar hassles. You can live w/o seeing the interview but I doubt you'll want to listen only to the first 23 preludes and fugues. I have not had similar problems with the other dual discs what I have (but I have only a few and after this experience will not buy more)."
