Synopsis

Album Description
Reissue of this 1989 debut album from the political and Pop-savvy McCarthy, a guitar-heavy UK outfit fronted by Malcolm Eden and featuring future Stereolab member Tim Gane. Their guitar jangle will remind many of The Byrds but their politicized lyrics lean more towards The Clash. Features the original tracklisting plus four rare bonus cuts. Booklet contains sleevenotes by Bob Stanley and Nicky Wire. 22 tracks. Cherry Red.

Jingle jangle all the way
F. Dangiolillo | NY | 10/26/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is 'the' McCarthy release to own. Pre-Stereolabbies in Johnny Marr Hatful toppling bid, and a very fine job I might add. Each 2 1/2 minute pop gem could've been peeled from the earliest of the Smiths repertoire and that's not a good thing, that's a GREAT thing. Malcolm Eden's down-the-nose lyrics are as cheeky as Morrissey's except the social satire bites off the heads of capitalists, bankers, elected officials, and probably you and I, even to this day. But this is a fun album. After this, mcCarthy - specifically Eden -begin to lose the jingly jangly hooks in return for darker hooks, longer songs and angrier lyrics. Two albums later, Malcolm leaves Tim Gane and new girlfriend/bandmate Laetitia Sadier to form their own label DUOPHONIC and Stereolab is born. If you've only heard their other releases, don't pass this one up, this album is great. And if you like it, grab Attitude by Wolfhounds, another C86 band that was a cut above their baggy peers."
