"I saw a similar edition of this group at Seattle's Jazz Alley and it was magic. John Blake's violin added a lot to the session and Charles Fambrough provided a strong anchor. Get it."
HOT Tribute to Phyllis Hyman from McCoy Tyner

"This work is hot R&B and wild jazz. The opening cut is clearly the beginning of a tribute to the talent of the late, great Phyllis Hyman. McCoy is burning on the ivories to accompany her vocal. True musical inspiration! Basically this work is McCoy's tribute to the jazz/R&B industry of the early 1980's. That being said anyone who loved the Philly Sound of the early 80's will surely enjoy this work.
For those who enjoy Ms. Hyman's voice, please don't miss the songs "Love Surrounds Us Everywhere", "I'll Be Around" and "In Search Of My Heart". The latter song is proof of her beautiful, rare talent. She is showcased magnificently here. It is probably one of her finest vocals ever.
The song "Senor Carlos" features Carlos Santana on guitar. Inside this song McCoy is inspired with passion. Stanley Clarke plays acoustic bass and electric bass on this album. His solos prove his artistry.
This work was sadly overlooked originally because it was a departure from McCoy's usual jazz format and because it was considered commercial. Many of the jazz greats in the industry saw the beauty in Phyllis Hyman's vocals and showcased her in their contributions. It is these kinds of brilliant sounds from some of our greatest in the industry that unfortunately slip through the cracks. Consider yourself lucky if you can find a copy somewhere."
A True Masterpiece

"Spectacular album of jazz...and the VOCALS are simply amazing.
I essentially purchased this CD to complete my Phyllis Hyman catalog, but after listening to the entire disc, I was pleasantly surprised at how smoothly this recording segues from sung vocals to straight ahead jazz and back again. The instrumental songs are good, but the songs with vocals are SPLENDID; and what make this disc worth buying. McCoy's piano playing is great. However, it seems to get overshadowed by his guest artists.
The album starts off with one of my all-time favorites, the LATE, GREAT, ONE & ONLY Ms. PHYLLIS HYMAN (1945 - 1995) singing Love Surrounds Us Everywhere. This song was perfect for her smoky, perfectly pitched voice; especially when she let loose and started to scat, impeccable. I LOVE THIS SONG.
Hannibal has Carlos Santana's signature guitar playing all over it.
I'll Be Around is another example of how Phyllis could hypnotize one with her vocal styling.
Senor Carlos - I like to drive to this song...I go on a musical journey while listening to this song. This is another example of how you can predominantly hear Carlos Santana over the other instruments.
In Search Of My Heart is the icing on the cake for this project. The vocal delivery is impeccable. Phyllis lets loose and soars over the piano bars.
Island Birdie is another favorite of mine that I like to drive to. It takes me to the islands of Jamaica (one of my favorite places to visit).
Overall this is a GREAT CD to introduce you to two very distinct artists."
