".
Rare disc features the maximum art of mammoth Max Reger.
Two enormous Violin Sonatas: Op. 122, e-minor (1911); Op. 139, c-minor (1915): feature post-Brahmsian Reger's usual game: passionately percussive opening movements, followed by wickedly impish scherzi, pensively expressive slow movements [largo], and sucessfully argued conclusions--all poured into a classic form. (Reger [like Brahms] also favoured other traditional forms such as the cello sonata; string quartet; piano trio; piano quartet, etc.)
Falling between Brahms and Hindemith--with hints of Bach and Mozart--Reger's art should be explored by connoisseurs.
