Synopsis

Album Description
Unmasked is the best of THE MASQUERADERS, featuring 26 tracks recorded from 1965 to 1972 in Dallas, Detroit and Memphis. The album includes their biggest hit single "I Ain't Got To Love Nobody Else" and all the favourites from this highly rated group. Covering the early years and the golden era, Unmasked contains many rarities and three previously unissued '60s tracks from the vaults of American Studios in Memphis. The 12-page sleeve booklet has informative liner notes by Martin Goggin plus rare photos. Much deserved and long overdue attention for this highly talented but often overlooked soul harmony group, featuring the amazing Lee Jones as lead vocalist on most tracks.

CD Reviews

Solid. Come & get your late 60's soul

"My other review got lost in cyberspace, apparently. But as I said before, think Temptations without the polish. Instantly likeable, if not earth-shattering."
A group that fell through the cracks.

"The Masqueraders fell through the cracks and did not get much recognition even at a time when Soul Harmony vocal groups were everywhere. This long-overdue and much-appreciated anthology finally gives The Masqueraders a fitting retrospective (with some previously unreleased tracks to boot!) and is a must-have for any serious fan of romantic Soul balladry. Of course, it would be nice to have the group's two Isaac Hayes-produced LPs reissued on CD but until that happens this collection offers a better-than-average retrospective of a group that deserved a much better fate."
Sorry, not the best of the Masqueraders!

"Sorry, I disagree with the editorial comment here. I have this CD but I think the best recordings the Masqueraders did were on their 1975 album "Everybody Wanna Live On" which was produced by Issac Hayes on the Hot Buttered Soul label. "Baby It's You" is good enough to have been a top ten R&B hit and "(Call Me) The Traveling Man" was close. These are the two best songs they ever recorded. But also on the same album "Honest and True" and "Your Sweet Love Is A Blessing" are really excellent too. It's a great shame more people don't know about them because I think they were really good. I guess they were too little known to get exposure even with Issac Hayes behind them at the time. I also like "Modern Day Woman" from their "Love Anonymous" 1977 follow-up album on Hot Buttered Soul. Sad to say, neither of these albums are available on CD and probably there are not many vinyl copies in existence."
