Synopsis

After four independent label releases, Mason Jennings became one of the first signings to the major subsidiary label of Modest Mouse's Isaac Brock. His naturally articulated, mid-range vocals bring to me the equally inviting Donovan, especially on "Some Say I'm Not," with its exotic rhythmic bed. The songs are full of a sort of optimistic searching, both romantic and spiritual. With the songs anchored by a first person vantage point, Jennings' friendly timbre makes for an utterly believable narrator. The arrangements are spare, but smartly constructed. The gentle piano flourishes and evocatively descending chords of "Moon Sailing on the Water" help to cast longing and dislocation in the hopeful glow of the restorative powers of the natural world. These ten songs by Jennings are like chamber music, each one given its own quietly powerful setting. --David Greenberger

CD Reviews

Amazing music
T. Berry | Rockledge, FL | 02/17/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"As a relative newcomer to Mason's music, I'll admit to becoming a fan by way of the Ghost Town movie, every song he writes has a purpose. Much has been made about the crisp production quality of Boneclouds, thanks to Modest Mouse front man Issac Brock's recording studio, but the result is sweeter and purer than anything else heard in years. The lyrics are incredible. The music is beautiful. Fans of contemplative folk rock music will enthusiastically listen to the tracks with a pleased heart and soul. This is feel good music with a sensitive touch. Highly Recommended 100%!"
Mason Is The Man!

"I'm truly glad that Mason isn't very well known, for that way I can enjoy him all to myself. Well, actually I like to throw him on for friends and then act like a pretentious snob when they ask, "Who is this?!" Another remarkable album from a criminally underrated musician."
