CD Reviews

Timeless Music, Timeless Movie
B. Eleveld | Corvallis, OR USA | 02/11/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I saw the movie that this soundtrack is from when i was alot younger. It always stuck with me, i would remember bits of pieces of it....the woman emerging from the skin of the seal, the boat drifting through the fog, the blonde girl fiona...however i forgot the title of the movie. I asked my mother last year of any of those images reminded her of a movie. She remembered the title fortunately, and i watched it again for the first time in years. Although it is a childrens movie, it made me cry and dream. I agree with anyone who says it is appropriate for kids but certainly enjoyable for adults. This time around it was still as beautiful as before, but the music stuck out to me particularly. However, being busy i forgot about it. This year, after spending the night at my friends house, after i had woken up and was fixing tea, the sounds of beautiful old celtic music started sliding through the air like fish. It was the soundtrack for the secert of roan innish, and it is some of the best celtic music i have heard. It is unadulterated with modern new age hooks (and sinkers). It feels pure and real, like the story of the selkie Nuala sounded to fiona: pure and distant, but tangible...."
A CD of quality and beauty
Rob Wintler-Cox | Maryland, USA | 12/03/2000

"The movie is one of my most favorite movies. It is haunting, beautiful, and totally unique. This soundtrack is a favorite of my whole family. It is Celtic music that hasn't been smoothed into a gooshy muzak like so many CDs of celtic music meant for popular consumption are. The music on the tape flows well from track to track and you never feel tempted to skip a track because it isn't up to the standards of the rest of the CD. I can't imagine anyone being disapointed by this CD."
Mystical Myth Explores Life's Unity
John D. Dooley | Southern California United States | 05/20/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"As with other reviews I can write "What a great CD, one of my favorite" the music fits the movie perfectly. Exploring the Irish myth of Selkies; Seal's that turn back & forth into humans. This myth helps to explain the unity of nature, the call of the sea for humans to live & explore, the dangers of losing one's heritage, & so much more. The music is timeless, haunting, beautiful, mystical, & a few adjectives more...Mason Daring really knows how to write great Celtic music uniting the past with the present. Some sections like "Liam & Nuala" are rather modern, almost a "2001 A Space Odyssey" awe with angelic female singing that gives you goose bumps. In other scections you will dance with the Irish jigs, cry with the lost dreams, & yearn to return to the sea. Try out "Crab Dream" on the Window Media or Real One Player to get a hint of this great CD."
