Rev & Roll
Lee Armstrong | Winterville, NC United States | 03/08/2003
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Mary McBride doesn't let the grass grown under her feet on her first CD. Born in Louisiana and raised in Washington DC, she's toured with two of my favorites, Fred Eaglesmith and Maria Muldaur. "Rev It Up" is a flat-out rocker written by Eaglesmith, "He's the kind that never says never; he's the kind that likes to drive & now he's driving me out of my mind." "If You Lived In My Town" has a propulsive beat with group background vocals that make you feel like you're with the crowd hangin' out at the pig pickin'. "Half Gone" and "Big Old Oak Table" are slower tracks that recall Lucinda Williams. Mary teams with Fred Eaglesmith to write the smoking title track rocker "Everything seemed alright, then the GD bottom fell out." Musically, this is a great sonic achievement; although those with an aversion to hearing the Lord's name taken in vain will simply have to deal with Mary on this one. "Goin' Down Fast" has a slow bluesy feel followed by the bouncy "Old Lea Johnson." Her DC roots show On "That Was Then, This is Now," a dose of rev & roll, "I remember when you told me you'd take me to some great falls." "Boys" is another favorite of mine as she flat-out smokes this rocker, "There are boys who are angels, boys who can't fly, boys who like it rough, boys who like to ride, boys who spend every night staring at the sky, boys who won't believe you when you wave bye bye." "Blind Boy" sounds like old-timey religion before moving into O Brother territory. The last track is the cajun-flavored bluegrass "Crazy Again." The hidden track tacked onto track 11 sounds like a religious satire after the band had been well saturated with the fruit of the vine. Mary will appeal to those who love the Americana roots rocker genre, creating her own school of rev & roll with this excellent disc. Enjoy!"

"Think Lucinda Williams songs sung by Janis Joplin. Great alt-country vibe with a powerful female vocalist. I bought the record because of a live show I saw at a festival recently. And the record is really, really good. Good songs and production. I would recommend this record to anyone that likes Lucinda Williams or Kasey Chambers or even Wilco."
