Prime Martinu

There is a tendency to judge composers by their most "serious" works, usually symphonies. In the case of Martinu, I have found that the smaller works appeal to me more than the symphonies. This recording features a selection of such works.

The most extensive work on the recording, "Parables" engages me the least, although it is often described as a "masterpiece." However, the other works on the release are exceptional. The Sinfonia concertante and Concerto grosso both contain brilliantly contrapuntal fast movements, moving, compact but expressive slow movements. The Overture and Rhapsody are also very engaging. Belohlavek and the Czech Philharmonic seem to have a way with this music and the audio engineering is excellent. Can't go wrong with this recording!
