Synopsis

Amazon.com
The Algerian-born, Paris-based pianist Martial Solal has been a beacon of Parisian jazz since the '40s when he played with Sidney Bechet, Django Reinhardt, and Don Byas. He performed his first gig in the Big Apple at the legendary Village Vanguard in 2001. Unfortunately, the gig opened one week after September 11th. Undaunted, Solal went on with the show. This CD is a recording of that event, featuring the pianist in a trio setting with French bassist Francois Moutin and American drummer Bill Stewart. Stylistically, Solal's pianisms ring with touches of Duke Ellington's dark harmonies, Thelonious Monk's quirky phrases, and Cecil Taylor's melodic ideas. Solal turns American pop standards like "Body and Soul" and "What is This Thing Called Love?" on their heads with his angular, jaunty melodic lines and kaleidoscopic trio interplay. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

CD Reviews

The best that music can be

(5 out of 5 stars)

"I first heard this man play about 35 years ago and I've felt ever since that he is in a class by himself. Like Tatum, his fingers seem to fly effortlessly up and down the keys, and I have NEVER heard him stumble. There seems to be no barrier between his endless ideas and flawless execution. There doesen't seem to be anything that he cannot play...and play with brilliance, imagination, fire, grace and humor. And he must be pushing 80 by now! His junior sidemen here are is equal in many ways, and thier joyfull interplay is infectious. This is simply beautiful music, without pretension, at once traditional and spontanious, not needing any promotion or hype, uncorruptable in its purity. These are artists and musicians in the truest sense of the words. So, enough words. Listen and be uplifted. Bless you all."
