CD ReviewsRather good--as far as it goes, that is (three and one-half Matthew G. Sherwin | last seen screaming at Amazon customer service | 05/07/2008 (4 out of 5 stars) "The Best Of Marie Osmond has excellent songs from this great singer. However, it's tough to put together a mere ten songs and call it a "best of" type of compilation. This annoys me; but what we do get is very good material. The quality of the sound is very good and the artwork is very nice as well. "Paper Roses" starts the album with Marie singing very sweetly; her voice is clearly a finely tuned instrument and together with a great backup chorus Marie makes this number her own with a few tempo and key changes. "Paper Roses" makes a fine start to this CD and I'm sure that you will enjoy Marie singing "Paper Roses" if you haven't heard this before. "There's No Stopping Your Heart" is another great tune that charms me with its beauty; the musical arrangement is very lush and Marie's excellent sense of timing enhances this ballad even further. Great! In addition, "Everybody's Crazy 'Bout My Baby" is clearly a major highlight of this CD; Marie sings this with style and grace and her delivery is very solid. The melody has some 1980s features but it holds its own very well even today two decades later! Marie does this one up right! Listen also for "Think With Your Heart" gets another `80s beat for a country flavored number that happens to work very well; and Marie sings this it truly takes flight! I really like "Think With Your Heart." "I Only Wanted You" is a number that amazes me with its natural beauty; and Marie makes this a timeless classic with her excellent diction and her timing. Maries sings this to perfection--and beyond! I'm very impressed; and the musical arrangement is very lush although it never drowns out Marie. "You're Still New To Me" is a great duet Marie Osmond performs with Paul Davis; and this is another number that I also really enjoy. This country flavored ballad has the percussion marking the beat while Marie and Paul sing this very, very well. The album also ends well with "I'll Be Faithful To You;" "I'll Be Faithful To You" is an excellent ballad with plenty of country flair; and this makes an excellent final ballad for this CD. My only gripe is that this album is too short. How can you take a mere ten songs and call then the "best of" Marie Osmond? I will take off one and ½ stars for this to make this a three and ½ star review. Sorry, folks. Marie Osmond's choice "to go country" certainly worked well for her; this CD amply proves it. I recommend this album for Marie Osmond fans; and people who appreciate quality country music will love this album for ages to come--even if it is rather short! " Most of The Best! Alan Russo | Cambridge, MA USA | 10/20/2000 (4 out of 5 stars) "This is a general collection of her 80's Country comeback hits including the #1 hits There's No Stopping Your Heart, Meet Me In Montanna(with Dan Seals) and You're Still New To(with Paul Davis). It also includes a remake, with the original musicians, of her first #1 Country hit from 1973 Paper Roses. She was only 13 then and it's interesting to hear her try to capture that innocence with a more mature voice. There are also 2 new songs added, the double hit single Like A Hurricane and Think With Your Heart. I Only Wanted You was another top 10 hit for her and is one of her best. The CD closes with the awesome song about love and loyalty called I'll Be Faithfull To You. Give it a listen to get familiar with her Best." Marie's eighties pop-country music Peter Durward Harris | Leicester England | 03/09/2004 (5 out of 5 stars) "I was never keen on the music that the Osmonds recorded in the seventies, so when I originally heard (in 1985) that Marie had gone country, I had my doubts - until I heard Meet me in Montana, her duet with Dan Seals, on one of his albums. I really wasn't expecting something that good. Helped by the success of that duet, Marie was successful on the country charts for a while. This budget collection brings together her big country hits of the eighties and also includes a re-recording of Paper roses, a song that she first recorded as a child. You might prefer the original recording, but I much prefer the version here. Marie got the same producer and many of the same musicians to make the re-recording, so the feel of the record is similar, but Marie had matured as a singer so (to my ears) it is far superior.
I only wanted you, You're still new to me (a duet with Paul Davis) and There\s no stopping your heart are among the other major country hits included. I'll be faithful to you was not released as a single but demonstrates that Marie could sing traditional country (the main instrument used on this track is a mandolin) when she wanted to. Several of the songs here (but not I'll be faithful to you) can also be found on 25 hits special collection, which covers her seventies music (including her duets with Donny) as well as her eighties music. If you enjoy her seventies music, you might want to buy that instead (it includes her first version of Paper roses). But as a sample Marie's music in the eighties, this is brilliant." |
