Synopsis

One of the world's best mariachi groups presents its best talents--excellent musicianship, superb ensemble playing, and solid material--on this 12-song collection of traditional Mexican sones and huapangos. From the crisply played "Son de la Negra," with its tension-filled violin strings, to the fun-filled cumbia "Las Copetonas," this CD sparkles with the energy and verve of world-class mariachis. On "Violin Huapango" the string players lay down increasingly sharp-edged strains leading up to an intricate tradeoff with the horns. But all is not serious work here. "El Mariachi Loco" rings with foot-stomping rhythms and sing-along-though-absurd lyrics about a party-mad mariachi, while "El Becerro" pokes fun at sheep. And while "El Querreque" and "Violin Huapango" have minimal lyrics, these are actual instrumental workouts, aimed at putting on display Mariachi Vargas' amazing speed and dexterity. --Ramiro Burr

CD Reviews

A follow-up to Ramiro Burr's review
Rogelio R. Santos | Kingwood, Texas USA | 10/08/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The above reviewer, Ramiro Burr is a music writer/critic for the San Antonio-Express paper. I've read his review of this CD and mostly agree with his conclusions; however, he completely missed this Mariachi's fantastic ability to capture the spirit of the classic 'Las Bodas de Luis Alonso." Very few mariachi groups can handle this piece with the crisp, vibrant, yet delicate strings AND with the brass crescendo that resonates at the end. I measure all mariachis by their ability to handle this piece or 'La Bikina.'"
Just what I wanted

"My wife was doing a Mexican theme dinner party and I wanted Mariachi music playing when the guests arrived. When I previewed this album it was everything I had hoped for. As with all good music, just close your eyes and go where it takes you. I will be buying more Mariachi Vargas music soon."
Puts Life back into you - Dance!

"This will put the life back in you. I play it in my car and I'm a much nicer person. This band is amazing... it seems corny when you first hear it but it grows quickly on you. I also got a Mariachi Cobre CD and thought at first they were better but kept playing this and realized it was Marichi Vargas that was my favorite. The "Violin Huapango" is just great. Highly recommend it for parties or livening up anything. Wish I could speak and sing Spanish. I may be in trouble because I hear these are the best Mariachi Band in the world and this is one of their best albums, so now I've been bitten by the bug for more latin music I'll have a hard time finding albums that will compare... This is a truly great album of Mariachi music..."
