Synopsis
Album Details Generally Described as 'aristocratic Fado', Maria Teresa De Noronha was in Fact One of the Most Extraordinary Singers Ever Revealed by Fado; But, Unlike Many of her Contemporaries During the Forties and Fifties, She Pursued a More Traditional, Conservative Way of Looking at the Gnere. Maria Teresa De Noronha Eschewed Innovations and Kept Instrumental Accompaniment to the Strict Minimum, Preferring to Let her Voice Explain What is Fado. This Compilation features 20 of her Greatest Tracks. |
CD ReviewsAn aristocrat in the Fado Luis Aguiar Santos | Lisbon, Portugal | 03/14/2006 (5 out of 5 stars) "Maria Teresa de Noronha (1918-1993), born Countess of Paraty, was one of the greatest singers of Fado, the traditional Portuguese balad. She publicly developed the so-called "aristocratic" branch of Fado, as it was privately played in some aristocratic households. She personally selected the lyrics and intervened in the composition of her songs, sometimes with her husband, the Count of Sabugosa. She was a regular presence at radio boadcasts and played on the BBC. Her crystal-clear voice, her perfect Portuguese diction (much influenced in its sonority by the sober tone of Coimbra Fado) and the musical and literary quality of her themes make her a superbe interpreter of Fado. In this CD, a selection of her best songs, we can hear a very good and representative part of the work of Maria Teresa de Noronha." Great fado David Porter Chandler | Melbourne, Australia | 12/22/2005 (4 out of 5 stars) "M-T de Noronha is to my mind a more lyrical singer than Amalia Rodrigues, although she has a somewhat more limited range. These are elegant, controlled, lovely renditions. I have owned her recordings since 1960, i.e. since her heyday. This is a lovely collection."
