Synopsis

Album Description
On July 7th 1994, Michel Petrucciani hosted the second ever "Dreyfus Night" ? a special concert in Paris meant to showcase the wonderful array of musicians associated with Francis Dreyfus and his new label. The night before the "Dreyfus Night," Francis Dreyfus attended a concert of Marcus Miller with Kenny Garrett. The two enthusiastically welcomed Francis? invitation to his special concert, and this historical quintet was born. The line-up was never to be repeated ? this was truly a once in a lifetime meeting of some of the most important figures in recent jazz history: Marcus Miller, Michel Petrucciani, Kenny Garrett, Bireli Lagrene, and Lenny White. Together they shocked and delighted a very lucky Parisian audience with a crackling set of funky jazz ? a "Massey Hall" for the modern era! Personnel: Marcus Miller - Bass & Bass Clarinet / Michel Petrucciani - Piano / Kenny Garrett - Soprano Sax / Biréli Lagrène - Guitar / Lenny White - Drums

Great Jazz from Paris
03/15/2004
(5 out of 5 stars)

"An unbelievable collection of three compositions (one by Petrucciani and two by Miller) that showcases the soloing capacity of each performer. Kenny Garrett and Marcus Miller are definately the highlight of the disk. The Petrucciani chart, Looking Up, shows not only the compositional mastery of the pianist but also allows Marcus Miller to shine like no other. A definate must for any fan of the mid-90's jazz scene. You will not be dissapointed."
A nice memorial

"This disc comes from an off-the-cuff supergroup concert organized by the late pianist Michel Petrucciani in 1994. This isn't the prettiest musical document in the world--the recording is all right but there are some serious off-mike moments--but it's still entirely listenable. It's quite the band: Marcus Miller on electric bass & bass clarinet, Kenny Garrett on alto, Bireli Lagrene on guitar, Lenny White on drums. Despite Petrucciani's billing, it's Marcus Miller who's the dominant voice here--he contributes two of the tunes, & gets off the most striking solo in his bass clarinet feature on "The King Is Gone"--but everyone shines, there are no pointless displays of firepower & chops, & despite the unrehearsed nature of the gig the players play with great understanding & sympathy. This isn't an A-list item in any of the players' discographies by any means, but if you're intrigued by the starry lineup you won't find it a disappointment either."
Marcus played with Petrucciani

"This CD was recorded on 1994 at a concert in Paris. All (only 3) songs recorded are very popular among us, and played over 15 minutes. So the long time Marcus's bass solo excited me. I think his play with Michel Petrucciani is precious. And I am known Michel's new world by this CD."
