The perfect antidote for cookie-cutter country

""All in Good Time" is a 1995 album by a geniune talent whose release from Sony came at a time when Nashville's labels were in a late-90's panic about where country music was going. If this brilliant album is any evidence, Marcus Hummon is where it should have been going. Hummon's thoughtful lyrics about love, loss and regret are the staples of country music. His blend of fiddles, jazz, R&B and white soul are a cut above. If his arrangements sometimes lean to the pop side, it is the quality of his lyrics that give his music more weight than any number of Nashville's present pop-tinged releases.Hummon writes about people who are wrestling with life, with romance, with guilt or with God. His music is heartland stuff--not too pop, nor does it bend over backwards into phony hillbilly nostalgia."One of These Days" was a number one hit for Tim McGraw in 1998. Here, the tale of a onetime hotshot wracked by self-doubt shows its power in Hummon's soul-weary vocal. In "All in Good Time," the stubborn protagonist of the song rejects everyone's attempt to shove him into a relationship with the Lord, only to finally find God on his own--all in good time. It is a song about both strength and submission, and ultimately about hope.Don't weep for Hummon. As a songwriter, he has written a continuing string of great radio hits, including several #1 records, and had two Grammy nominations ("Only Love," for Wynona, and "Ready to Run" for the Dixie Chicks,) plus released a new album "Looking for the Child" on the small indie label Velvet Armadillo Records. The sad thing is that Hummon is not on tour nor on the radio, which are where talent like his belongs."
One good find

"Some of the most charming lyrics and music you'll find anywhere. The stories are so real and the performance so rich that I play it again and again and never tire of it. First rate songwriting, and this guy can express the most honest confessions and perspective with comfortable emotion. Buy it and pick up the "The Sound of One Fan Clapping" as well, you'll thank me. "Broken Road" rocked my world. Thanks Marcus."
