Album DescriptionMandarin Movie is the new project from Chicago native and current Brazil resident Rob Mazurek, a cornetist, composer, painter, improviser and multimedia artist whose unique musical style draws from free jazz, hard-bop, experimental electronica and minimalism. He is co-founder and member of Chicago Underground Duo/Trio/Quartet/Orchestra as well as avant-jazz/funk ensemble Isotope 217. He has releases on Thrill Jockey, Moikai (Jim O?Rourke?s label), Delmark, Aesthetics and Mego (Fennesz, Pita), to name a few. Mazurek has received worldwide press coverage, appearing on the cover of UK?s The Wire and receiving glorious reviews in Rolling Stone, New York Times and Chicago Sun-Times. He has toured extensively in North America, Europe, South America and Japan and has contributed to records by such artists as Stereolab, Tortoise, Gastr Del Sol, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Aluminum Group, Jim O?Rourke, Brokeback, Sam Prekop, Pan American, Fred Hopkins and L?altra. A visual artist as well, he has exhibited paintings at the Carrie Secrist Gallery in Chicago. Mandarin Movie?s members have a long, rich musical history, covering a wide spectrum of collaborations in the jazz, avant, indie and experimental worlds. Other contributors include John Herndon (Tortoise, 5ive Style, A Grape Dope), Rick Rizzo (Eleventh Dream Day), Jim Becker (Califone) and Mikael Jorgensen. Mandarin Movie?s debut release is a full-frequency audio assault, dense and beautiful at times & unrestrained, chaotic and hard at others, with an almost sculptural quality, always preparing us for the beauty of sound and silence. Not for the faint of heart!
