This "budget-priced" 2000 BMG release has just
ten tracks, but eight of them are winners. Six of
them were indeed substantial hits for Main Ingredient
between 1970 & 1974, including their Top 10 crossover
hits "Everybody Plays the Fool" and "Just Don't Want
to Be Lonely." A seventh track, the Stevie-Wonder-
composed "Girl Blue," got stuck on Billboard's Hot
Soul Singles chart at #51 in 1973 and isn't one
of Stevie's better tunes.
Of the three non-hits here, two are certainly
worth attention. The pop group Bread's 1970 smash
"Make It With You," whatever you think of the song,
gets a most respectable treatment with a kind of
choral effect to the harmonies. "The Girl I Left Behind"
is another fine ballad. Only the last track, "Where
Were You When I Needed You," didn't impress.
