"I was prompted to acquire this CD by hearing Halasz's excellent Mahler 7th and Das Lied Von Der Erde. There is a bit of a problem with the sound engineering. It is highly resonant, and sometimes it's hard to make out what the french horns are doing. Still, the overall sound picture is pleasant, and the sound has good weight and body--not to be overlooked when recording Mahler. As in the 7th, Halasz has a tight control on the proceedings. I rarely have heard the Katowice orchestra play with such exactitude and thrilling entrances. Moments like sustained notes on the violins or pedal points on the basses are gripping in a way I've rarely experienced. Tempos are moderate throughout, but there is no shortage of excitement. Because of the sound engineering, this CD would not be my first choice for a Mahler 1st, but it definitely preserves a first-class performance. Blumine follows the Symphony in a delicate, subtle reading that should win it many admirers."
