"THIS CD IS A PERFECT "10". Superlative performances, arrangements, and outstanding sound quality. The Zipoli work has such luscious textures and interplay of oboe, cello and orchestra that grown men are moved to tears. Yes, its that good."

"I'm just not a fan of the French school of oboe. Pierre Pierlot's tone is too bright and whiny. He is quite an accomplished oboist technically, but his sound is not to my taste at all. The oboe should have a warm, dark, rich sound. All in all, there are better recordings out there. I have yet to find one of the Marcello Concerto in c minor that I like."

"Pierre Pierlot (1921-2007) was the most well-known and one of the best of French oboists in the 20th century. His fluent playing, natural phrasing, sweet tone, ample vibrato (too ample for some) and flawless technique have been inspiration for many (including the great Lothar Koch, who picked up the oboe upon hearing Pierlot).
This album features some of the most well-known pieces of the oboe repetoire, as well as the little-known but exceedingly beautiful piece by Zopoli. The recorded sound (from 1963 to 1970) was excellent. The Cimarosa and the Albinoni presented here were Pierlot's second recordings of each, and they are definitely superior to the earlier recordings (on EMI).
For those of you oboists who are not familiar to the French school of playing, this is definitely an ear-opener. Modern French players don't play with this style anymore, and Buffet doesn't make the same kind of oboes either, so this is truly a piece of history. I strongly recommend anyone who loves the oboe to acquire this album.
For those of you looking for rare Pierlot recordings, Erato has also reissued a 6-CD set of Schumann chamber works, with Pierlot performing the ever-popular Schumann Romances:
