CD Reviews

...for the double cd version
Curmudgeon | West Australia | 12/08/2006

"For some reason, the Maestro soundtrack has been released in Australia as a double compilation with a total 20 tracks, all full length. And it's fantastic. Although the single version is fine I would recommend hunting the 2 cd version as it's far superior to the single. At least one other reviewer has complained of poor sound quality, but again, this doesn't seem to be a problem with the double (although some tracks sound like they were sourced from vinyl). Around the clubs in the 80s but don't recognise many of the tracks listed? Fear not, nearly all of them will be instantly familiar once heard, and if you love melodic house (the nexus of disco, soul and the emerging sound of Detroit techno and acid house) you will adore this. Several recent releases compiling tracks from the Paradise Garage, the Sound Gallery, the Loft, etc feature great music, but for my money the Maestro soundtrack betters them because it manages to incorporate more of the electro sounds of the mid-late 80s, such as The Nightwriters' Let The Music Use You and Mr Fingers' classic Can You Feel It. An outstanding soundtrack for an era which still sounds fresh."
Not what was expected

"The main problem with this soundtrack is the quality, which was rather poor. Although clear, it has no bass. I've downloaded better quality CDs. Some music is not from the Garage days (e.g., Byron Stingley), though most of the music does represent the era. However, I have yet to find a CD that captures my experience of Larry at the Garage."
Not a bad representation!

"My only issue with the soundtrack (yes I have the DVD too) is why did they leave the narrative from the documentary over the music in the soundtrack? My copy came as a promo and not sure if this detail was fixed before the retail version came out or not. I agree with others, excellent soundtrack, could have been longer and definitely missed a few of the gems that are in the DVD."
