CD Reviews

Third single off of Madonna's "MUSIC" album - Good Stuff
A. Bennett | 05/02/2001
(4 out of 5 stars)

"This is Madonna's 3rd single release off of her most recent album "MUSIC." There are a total of 9 tracks on the single. Here is the track listing:(1) Paul Oakenfold Perfecto Mix - 7:18(2) Richard Vission Velvet Masta Mix - 8:08(3) Calderone & Quayle Dark Side Mix - 6:42(4) Tracy Young Club Mix - 8:54(5) Above & Beyond 12" Club Mix - 7:27(6) Tracy Young Cool Out Radio Mix - 4:45(7) Richard Vission Velvet Masta Edit - 3:39(8) Above & Beyond Club Radio Edit - 3:45(9) Lo Que Siente La Mujer (What it feels like...) - 4:43 All of the mixes are pretty good. Overall, I feel that this cd is a good purchase. I guess you really can't go wrong making a purchase by a megastar such as Madonna. :o) And if you've liked any of her other singles from the same album, then you'll probably be satisfied with this one as well. My personal favorite mixes on this release are the Richard Vission, Tracy Young and Above & Beyond mixes. The Vission, Tracy Young, and (I believe) the Calderone/Quayle mixes are the only mixes that contain the full set of lyrics from the original song. The Oakenfold and Above & Beyond mixes don't contain all of the lyrics. (I think they just contain the chorus) - which is repeated at different times throughout the mixes. But they are all still very good. The Calderone/Quayle mix is a bit on the slow side, but sounds very cool nontheless. Also, the Tracy Young Cool Out Radio Mix is NOT just a shorter version of the Club Mix, it's actually a totally different mix and is about the same speed/length as the original cut, but is slightly different. (Just your "typical" remix, I guess you could say) The last track is, of course, the original song, but in Spanish. (As with her last two maxi singles, the album version of the song is not included on the cd). I give this single four stars only because I wish that the other mixes, such as the Paul Oakenfold mix would have contained the full set of lyrics, but other than that, I thought the single was great. Though it did not contain all of the lyrics, I really enojyed the Above & Beyond Mix. (So just 'cause all of the lyrics may not be included in a mix of a song, does not mean it is bad) ;o) If you are any fan of Madonna's, I'm sure you will enjoy this release. Hope this review (and track listing) was helpful for you..."
"Above and Beyond" The Call Of Duty
A. Bennett | New Hampsha | 05/01/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"WOW! Madonna's "What It Feels Like For A Girl" is one of her best songs to ever grace digital technology. Although the album version is absent on this gem(you should have already bought "Music" anyway), be sure to get this single. Why? Well listen to "Above and Beyond's" remix and you'll know why. It is amazing. It is similar to the video version, but spruced up. A little slice of heaven. Very very dancable, and it's a safe bet that it will be a classic remix for Madonna. The other mixes are good too. Victor Calderone and Mac Quayle did a nice mix(a reminder that every remix doesn't have to be a club mix), Vission funked Madonna up(again), but Paul Oakenfold and Tracy Young could have found some more inspiration cause their mixes are a little...well...not fun(Young is the main offender here). The spanish version is also included, its a cute track and Madonna gives a strong vocal performance. I bought it and so should you!"
Unique Single To Have

"This a neat single. It comes housed in a cardboard sleeve and then inside the cardboard sleeve, you will find another cardboard sleeve w/cd and a poster. The Poster is of the horse image, that is seen behind the cd in the U.S. Maxi. The tracks here are all found on the U.S. Maxi w/the exception of the Album Version.

1. Album Version: The One that appeared on the album, Music, not the video.

2. Calderone & Quale Dark Side Mix: This remix is differnt from the others. It is has a tribal sound to it and it slower. In this version you hear more of Madonna's Vocals come out.

3. Above & Beyond 12" Club Mix: This version has a very techno/electronic feel to it. This version is great for dancing. The Above and Beyond Radio Edit (Not Included here) is the version used in the controversial Video of What it Feels Like For a Girl.

4. Paul Okenfold Perfecto Mix: This is a great version to play in a club or dance to, but not one to show off Madonna's vocals. They are very scarce here.

5. Richard Vision Velvet Masta Mix: The best remix I have heard. This one starts off Slowly and about a minute into the song, it burts into a differnt mix, that you will want to "Boogie Woogie" too.
