Amazon.comThis 1929 recording was the discographic premier for Smetena's patriotic cycle of six symphonic poems. The sound is distant and faded, yet seems oddly appropriate to Talich's conception, which is more expansive, earthy, and elemental than his subsequent 1941 and 1954 remakes with the same orchestra. While the playing lacks the transparency and polish of Talich's later Ma Vlast, the snarling low winds and double basses bring the music's primeval qualities into focus. Ample rubatos and liberal string portamentos similarly evoke an era that has long passed into history. A fascinating release. --Jed Distler
