CD ReviewsA must have for Lullacry fans Erica Anderson | Minneapolis, MN | 01/01/2005 (5 out of 5 stars) "I haven't been a Lullacry fan for a long time. I got into them last year with "Crucify My Heart", their second album and first album with lead singer Tanja. Their music is a reminscent of the days when hair metal ruled the airwaves, very catchy but rocks out as well. I was immediately hooked on the band when I first heard them, especially with the single "Touch the Flame", an addictively catchy metal song that is fun to sing along to.
A year later, the band makes their US debut by opening up for another Finnish metal band Nightwish this past summer. In the process they put out an EP called "Fire Within" but it is only available as an import. I was lucky to find a copy in the used bins. "Fire Within" is a great tide-me-over while the band is currently in the process of working on their follow-up album to "Crucify My Heart". Here is the songs on the EP: 1. Fire Within 2. L.O.V.E Machine 3. Be My God (Tribal Reprise) 4. The #1 Rebel 5. Crucify My Heart pt. II (Piano Version) "Fire Within" kicks off the EP. It is one of the new/previously unreleased songs. Great song. Classic Lullacry. Track #2 "L.O.V.E Machine" is a WASP cover. Great interpretation. "Be My God" and "Crucify My Heart" are two older songs but were given a makeover. "Be My God" is from the band's first album of the same namesake. I first heard this song when the band played with Nightwish over the summer. At first I didn't like it at the concert but when I bought this EP and started listening to "Be My God", the song slowly grew on me. I love the piano version of "Crucify My Heart". It is such a contrast from the original version which is heavier and filled with crunchy guitar riffs. I was surprised to hear how well it sounded as a piano ballad. "The #1 Rebel" is another new/previously unreleased song. Great song. I especially love the chorus. For a song that uses acoustic guitars, it certainly rocks out. Other than being only 24 minutes long, I thought "Fire Within" was flawless. I think it is obvious that the band has tightened up its classic metal sound with their not-so new lead singer Tanja. The production was crisp but not overly produced. Tanja may lack Tarja's (Nightwish) incredible vocal range nor is her vocals remotely operatic but she is more than just a competant singer. Her vocals mesh well with the the band's brand of heavy metal. "Fire Within" is a definite must have for fans of this Finnish metal band. I can't wait for their new album. They really made a fan out of me after I saw them live in concert." |
