Gardel Prize Winner 2003 - Best Folklore Album
Penumbra | Atlanta, GA USA | 07/08/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)
"Luis Salinas is a self taught Argentine musician. In fact, he has done such a marvelous job teaching himself that he has won Argentina's prestigious Gardel Prize three times to date. The first win was in 2003 for this very CD, "Musica Argentina."
Although Salinas is best known for his jazz recordings, the selections on this CD are interpretations of Argentine folk music, tangos, milongas, and waltzes. These takes are, for the most part, lovingly straightforward, with just a subtle hint of Salinas' signature jazz touch. This is beautiful and passionately played acoustic guitar. Simple, yet rich and nuanced.
Unfortunately Amazon has not provided sound clips to preview the music. If you're interested in hearing some samples from "Musica Argentina" and other CD's, you can hear them on Luis Salinas' homepage. Listen to them and you'll agree that this 2-cd set is worth more than the import price tag.
