"For some time I've been well acquainted with Luigi Boccherini primarily in name only. For some reason, Boccherini's music has never been that appealing to me. The aforesaid has changed a great deal, for me, with my acquisition of this Virgin recording that features some of Luigi's chamber music played fantastically by Europa Galante and violinist Fabio Biondi.
Featured in this splendid recording are a String Quartet, String Quintet, String Trio for violin viola and cello, and a String Sextet for 2 violins, 2 violas and 2 cellos. The works are charming and sound, to me, typically Baroque EXCEPT there is a rather somber side to them especially the later ones (i.e., String Quintet, op. 91 in C minor, String quartet op. 41 in C minor.) All of the works on this recording are in four (4) movements and are in minor keys which, of course, makes them kind of sad. However, there is a greater sense of sadness, to me, that far exceeds merely the "keys" they were written in. According to the notes, Boccherini was not too happy, at this time, with his composing job in Spain. Anyway, the works are beautiful and are played wonderfully with the sound of the recording being great.
If you like Boccherini's music or like me need a better acquaintance with same do buy this album; it's splendid indeed.
