"If you love the capricious nature of Boccherini's chamber music, in particular that of the guitar quintets, you will definitely enjoy this album. La Real Camarata's playing is superlative; each movement is infused by the "galant" spirit so characteristic of Boccherini's music, the balance is excellent and the playing and intonation faultless.
What is perhaps the most astounding about these pieces, written for two violins and cello (i.e., basically a trio sonata ensemble without harpsichord, quite obsolete by the time Boccherini wrote these works), is that they do not sound like they are written for a trio at all, but rather a string quartet. Boccherini exploits the instruments ingeniously, often using double-stops and open strings - the latter particularly in the cello part - to achieve a sonority that is of astounding resonance. Particularly enjoyable about these late works is that they are so typical of Boccherini's distinctive mature style, which many listeners will no doubt recognize from the much more famous guitar quintets. These trios are equally well-written and pleasurable.
Definitely one of the best CD's I've heard recently and a very valuable addition to the catalog of Boccherini recordings!"
