Synopsis

Amazon.com essential recording
The Los Lobos fan might reasonably ask what--besides length and a wonderful accompanying booklet--Más y Más has over 1993's two-CD Just Another Band from East L.A.. The answer is longwinded: here are album tracks (anywhere from four to eight from each studio album), outtakes, demos, and live cuts, as well as selections from tribute albums, soundtracks, and side projects. Some highlights that weren't on the earlier collection include a 1983 rockabilly sizzler, "We're Gonna Rock," the similarly charged "Rip It Up" (an '87 outtake from La Bamba), Richard Thompson's "Down Where the Drunkards Roll" (from the '94 tribute Beat the Retreat), a live take on the Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows" (from a '93 television tribute), "Route 90" (from the pristine Lobos children's collection, Papa's Dream), and a '97 live version of Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin' On" with Sheryl Crow guesting on vocals. This doesn't even take into account the songs from six soundtracks and a personal fave, "Alone in a Crowd" (from I Only Wrote This Song for You: A Tribute to Johnny Thunders) and a fab take on Doug Sahm's "She's About a Mover" from '96. This and more pushes Más y Más out of the group of multi-CD boxes devoted to defunct artists and into the camp of justly deserved career overviews created while the subjects are still in full flight. --Andrew Bartlett

CD Reviews

A Breathless Compelation of one of America's best
Bob Richards | London England | 01/02/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Like the Grateful Dead, Los Lobos is a selected taste with an auidence to match. Clearly thier musical depth is what keeps them intersting and entertaining. The combination of traditonal Mexican/Chicano endeavours and farily straight forward rock and roll/rythymn blues may leave some wondering what in the world they are trying to communicate. This is clearly a group of people with tremendous cultural pride that have learned the songs of their fathers with such precision and competency that this itself would stand as a work alone. Just have a listen to Del Este DeLos Angeles to understand this. Taken as a straight rock and roll band Los Lobos delivers a body of work that leaves the listener wanting more. This 4 CD compelation is stunning and should be in the collection of any serious listenter of "adult rock and roll". Long live the wolf."
A great collection from a great band!!

"If this collection doesn't get your feet moving, check your pulse! There's plenty on this four disk retrospective for every Los Lobos fan, from their touching, acoustic Mexican ballads, to the driving rock and roll that they've been blowing the roofs off bars, clubs, and theaters with for years. It's so rare to find a band that doesn't have a weak link. Every member is an outstanding musician in his own right, and this collection admirably showcases their many talents.I've had the pleasure of seeing Los Lobos a number of times since ~1984, and they just keep getting better. If you hear that they're going to be playing in your area, don't miss the chance to see one of America's greatest bands. You won't be disappointed!"
Good collection, but not what I've been waiting for
Mark Hazell | Halifax, Nova Scotia Canada | 11/25/2000
(4 out of 5 stars)

"It's hard to find fault with this four disc collection -- selections from all of the band's albums to date are featured, along with a wonderful array of live performances, out takes, and side projects. For anyone not familiar with Los Lobos, I can think of no better way to make their acquaintance. Having seen them play many times over the last fifteen years, however, I keep hoping for a four(hundred) disc set of live performances. For my money, they are the band that should be releasing a series of "Dick's Picks" albums -- I know I'd buy them."
