You'd be forgiven if, after hearing Lo'Jo's intoxicating new live album Ce Soir La, you imagined that you'd stumbled across a long-lost recording of Serge Gainsbourg's brother and his cabaret troupe lost somewhere in Morocco. So it is with Lo'Jo, the utterly unclassifiable French/Arabic/West African hybrid that has been stitching the sounds of the globe together into a strange and beautiful tapestry for over ten years now. Fans of the group will be delighted to know that the live versions here in many cases surpass the studio offerings- like leader Denis Pean's funky Tom Waits turn on "A l'arene des audacieux" and "Senor Calice," which features the Gangre Brass Band from Benin. Those unacquainted with Lo'Jo's polyglot sound, which includes everything from violin and piano to Turkish clarinet, gorgeous Arabic harmonies and West African stringed instruments such as the imzad and kamel n'goni, will find this as good an introduction as any, especially since the disc includes an enhanced video clip of the song "Tanguito," where a solitary rope acrobat twirls high above the stage in rhythm to Lo'Jo's otherworldly harmonies. --Ezra Gale

Beautiful!

"Just one comment: every time I play it on our wwuh.org radio station, people call and ask what it is and where they can get it. Now that you know the answers, buy without reservations -and let your friends bug you with those questions."
Neo-tango or Francophone Rock, take your pick
Mark Hammond | Chambersburg, PA USA | 11/25/2005

"I had originally purchased Lo' Jo's music because it was recommended on Sharna Fabiano's website [...]. My first purchase was L'une des Siens (Au Cabaret Sauvage). There is something about this music that keeps drawing you back to it. One thing you should know is that there are some selections which are on L'une des Siens which are also on Ce Soir La -- they include "A l'arene des audacieux", "Tangito," and "Bougnoule." In a like manner, there are are selections which are also included in Boheme de cristal which are also on Ce Soir La, and these include "Brule la Meche," and "Le piano." You will also note some selections in the CD "Mojo Radio" which are also on "Ce Soir La", including "Sin Acabar" and "Chaque Humain." I do not want to see you disappointed, just be aware and be smart consumer.

Lo' Jo has an eclectic mixture of French chason and Algerian-French influences. You could almost expect to hear this in "les banlieues" (immigrant suburbs in France). HOWEVER, my interest in Lo' Jo is as "néo-tango." It is kind of neat to have a tanda of a some of these to include in your milonga. In that regard, I would include "Invitation," "Brule la Meche," "Tangito," and "Bougnoule." It is strange music, and it grows on you."
Pan-Mediterranean, Ur-trbal fusion music, performed live
Frank Camm | Northern Virginia | 03/23/2006
(4 out of 5 stars)

"They play a Mediterranean fusion music that leans heavily on Arabic, Middle Eastern, Gypsy, and Iberian flavors, rich polyrhythms, and a sensuous, Ur-tribal sensibility that speak of darker feelings from a time and place before our own. The group centers on a gruff lead male singer and his B-52s sound-alike back-up. The spirit of the group repeatedly brings back memories of the LaFlammes in A Beautiful Day. Within these parameters, the group works passionately in many directions. This live performance captures the excitement one would expect from such tribal music, but at the expense of the production values underlying much of the careful layering used to create the fusion--a small and worthwhile sacrifice, I'd say."
