"Liz Story has been a favorite of mine for some time. She is quite a bit more adventurous than a lot of musicians who get genrefied as 'new age,' shifting from melodious to jazz-like, and not a few moments of parody and comedy. Expecting Story to play predictable is ill-advised, and Night Sky Essays are an example of the breadth of her talent.
The set of pieces is ostensible based on the progress of the Zodiac. But even a cursory listen will reveal the Liz Story's zodiac is a bit different from the one we are used to. Who would imagine Leo doing a dance tune, or Aries in stately chords. She ranges over classical, folk, pop, jazz, and a dash of impressionism in this one album.
Eclectic in style there still is real thought behind the work. She offers no justification, no explanation, just a set of demonstrations of fine keyboard art."
