Synopsis

Album Description
After Johnny Thunders' Heartbreakers split in the late 70's, the group would re-group for reunion gigs from time to time (up until Thunder's death in 1991). One of their first reunions took place at N.Y.C.'s infamous Max's Kansas City in 1979, which was recorded and released soonafter. Due to the album's success, plans were arranged to record a second gig an Max's; the only problem was that it was aborted ? the band blasted through a total of five tracks, before leaving the stage to the fans' bewilderment, and not returning (drug use was rampant among the Heartbreakers). What the good folks at ROIR have done is re-release the long out-of-print original Live At Max's album, with the five tracks from the planned Vol. II set tacked on as bonus tracks. The band is captured in all of their drunk-and-stoned glory, with spirited versions of all their best known tunes: "Chinese Rocks," "Can't Keep My Eyes on You," "One Track Mind" and "Milk Me" (a.k.a. "Chatterbox"). Also! present are strong tracks never officially recorded by the Heartbreakers ? "So Alone," "Too Much Junkie Business" and "London" (Thunders' response to the Sex Pistols' "New York"). ? Greg Prato (All Music Guide)

Another Thunders live album
Timothy Horrigan | Durham, NH United States | 03/05/2004

"There are several Johnny Thunders live albums out there. This is one he made with Walter Lure under the rubric "Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers." Johnny was a brilliant performer, even though he was pretty erratic. (And so was/is Walter Lure.) The sound is pretty good on this disc (originally recorded at Max's in NY City, not longer after he and Walter Lure lost the Heartbreakers' record deal), the low points aren't as low as usual, and the high points aren't as high. Jerry Nolan is missing from this particular edition of the band, but Billy Rath is present. The later recordings from the 1980s are generally more interesting (albeit much less professional than this effort.)One good thing about this live set is that he isn't constantly stopping the show to tell the soundman to turn the ****ing PA up. (Why was Johnny always hassling the soundmen? I wonder if he was suffering from hearing loss? It's possible...) Another good thing is that most of his best tunes are present."

"The album has it's flaws, it's not their best performance, but it's still very good. The band is trashy, not as much as their Speakeasy performance, but they're also in shape and in tune. If your looking for some good, trashy punk-rock, pick this up, and if your a Thunder's fan it's pretty much essential."
