These 83 songs go a long way toward demonstrating how Little Feat evolved their hard-to-define but infectious swamp-rock, blues, and boogie sound. The final disc in the four-disc Hotcakes & Outtakes, dubbed "Studio Out... more »takes," offers up the very first demo tapes made by Lowell George, the mastermind of the group. Backed by keyboardist Billy Payne, drummer Richie Hayward, and bassist Roy Estrada (the first player to leave the band), George's down-and-dirty slide guitar and plaintive voice blend grit, intelligence, and humor. Combining an off-center Southern California rock sensibility (George and Estrada had both been members of Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention) with a love of New Orleans rhythms, Little Feat became a quintessentially American band. Songs from their classic albums are gathered here, as well as live recordings and tracks from the post-George era. After George died, the group took a hiatus in the 1980s before reforming; the third disc chronicles 1988 to '98 and shows that Little Feat are as distinctive as ever. The box includes notes by Bud Scoppa, interviews with the group's founding members, and a previously unseen painting by Neon Park, whose cover art graced a number of Little Feat albums. The definitive Feat overview, this is ideal for old fans and newcomers alike. --Wally Shoup« less

"Lowell George left some big shoes to fill when he died. George wasn't Little Feat but as its founder he was the heart and soul of the band. When he passed away prematurely in his 30's, it seemed like it was the end of the band. However the band did regroup with the same line up plus additional members to fill in the void left by George. This terrific overview of the band's career covers all of their seminal Warner Brothers recordings on the first two discs and includes pre-Warner recordings that George made with the band before being signed. The third disc consists of material from the 80's and 90's incarnations (the set was released in 2000).
The fourth disc includes previously unreleased material, alternate takes of Feat classics and a single track from George's band before Little Feat The Factory. The booklet is terrific with a great essay about the band's history, George and why the band decided to carry on without George. While George was an essential part of the band, he had distanced himself after the fourth album ("Feats Don't Fail Me Now")writing less than before due to his health problems.
While some of the live tracks that were NOT on the original "Waiting for Columbus" included here did eventually surface on the 2 disc remaster of that album, it's still great to have them here in one spot. This is probably one of the best compilations that Rhino has assembled in the past 10 years because 1) no band was more deserving 2) Although they didn't sell a boatload of records they were a huge influence on other bands 3) The compilation covers a broad canvas of time and a variety of record labels. Only Rhino could have licensed all this stuff for use in one place. I didn't give the set five stars because, while the material that Little Feat did after George's death is extremely good, the band is still missing its heart and soul. 4 1/2 stars"

"A must have for any fan of jambands, blues-rock, folk-rock and southern fried boogie.
A wonderful retrospective of a great american band.
Lowell George was one of the finest songwriters in rock. And a great guitar player."

"Boxed sets can represent many things to many people. For some it's about the rare previously unreleased gems; for others it's the comprehensiveness of a body of work, and, then there are those that want it all. So boxed sets more often than not are doomed to disappoint. Or become an archival geek collector's treasure that rarely gets played. But this set is the real thing. Throw any disc into your changer and you will be transported into that sweaty summery feeling of rock and roll. Energy from one song slips into the tenderness of the next, yet no one takes anything too seriously. Every Little Feat fan has a favourite album that takes them to a special place in their past. This set will transport you from that moment into countless other destinations. If you are into the rock and roll as defined by musicians like Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes and NRBQ these discs will spend a lot of time churning through your speakers. And this is the real test of R and R boxed sets. They need to get played LOUD.
Get it soon. these boxed sets have a habit of disapearing."

"An excellent collection of Little Feats "best of" music, w/ and w/o Lowell Goerge, plus an entire CD of unreleased Goerge work. The unreleased material is often not of the quality of the formal releases but has historical interest when nothing else. Good selection of album entrees w/ less emphasis on Waiting For Columbus which is great because many own already. Every American music collection needs some or alot of Little Feat to in order to be respectable!"
