CD Reviews

Not the Best Richie Compilation
Andre LeBlanc | North Dakota | 06/08/2004
(2 out of 5 stars)

"If your CD collection is weak on Lionel Richie and you are looking for a nice compilation of his hits, I would recommend "The Definitive Collection" over this "20th Century Masters" album. This CD only has 11 tracks. "The Definitive Collection" has 20, and it's still 1 CD. This album is inexcusably missing some of Lionel's most significant and important hits, including "Endless Love," "Stuck On You," "Sail On," "Penny Lover," and "Ballerina Girl." All of those songs are on "The Definitive Collection." There are some tracks from this CD that aren't on "The Definitive Collection," so I recommend you compare the track lists before choosing. But in the end, I think you will agree that this is (by far) the weaker of the two sets."

Not Truly Enough

"When it comes to single disc greatest hits album, they often seem to really be a hit of miss. For Universal, they've often thought it would be easy to get people to buy into music with their 20th Century Masters: Millennium Collection. Unfortunately, they don't always get what actually is worth the money you spent on it. That has also happened with artists from the past, and Lionel Richie is one of them. Although he has made some strong songs recently, but they just don't compare to his glory days with Motown from his solo work and especially with The Commodores. But, back in 2003 when Universal unveiled Lionel's Millennium Collection record, it missed the mark by a longshot, and it hasn't changed at all.

The 2007 re-release of Lionel Richie: 20th Century Masters Millennium Collection, now in recycled packaging, showcases 11 of Lionel's tracks from his solo era and with The Commodores. The collection doesn't really deliver being a definitive must buy, as much as it tries to gear towards those who haven't heard a Lionel Richie song before. The collection does include some classics like Say You, Say Me, his 1983 smash All Night Long, Hello, and Lady (You Bring me Up). Sadly, though the collection does overlook a lot of Lionel's great songs like Endless Love, his classic duet with Diana Ross, Running With The Night. On top of that, a lot of Commodores classics weren't highlighted here wither like Easy or Brick House.

All in all, I was a bit dissapointed with the 20th Century Masters: Millennium Collection on Lionel Richie. It really doesn't measure up with other hits albums. Instead, if you're new to Lionel Richie's music, I really recommend you buy the 2003 Definitive Collection. It is a much better album, at the exact same price. As for this collection, it doesn't feel easy like Sunday Morning.
