Synopsis
Amazon.com Promising singer-guitarist Dave Thompson's career seems mired today. He hasn't played much outside the Mississippi club and festival circuit for years. But when this CD was first issued, in 1995, he was the Fat Possum label's hot young firebrand--already a 10-year veteran of Greenville's tough Nelson Street blues scene at age 24. Thompson's songs, like the funky "Standing Up On My Own," the gritty shuffle "After Hours Bar," and his state-of-the-me report "Mississippi Boy," were pages in his diary. They sound even stronger now, and his guitar playing--while derivative of Albert King and Stevie Ray Vaughan--has yet to be equaled for pure soul or authenticity by the newer crop of young stars. Even when Thompson's making like a down-home Jeff Beck, his supple bends and sweet tone keep in touch with his true-to-the-blues economy and pace. May this album's reappearance prompt Thompson's long-overdue sequel. --Ted Drozdowski Similar CDs

CD ReviewsBlues Masterpiece 08/08/2000 (5 out of 5 stars) "This album represents a modern look at how the blues should be played. Each track is well thought out, each note necessary. Dave is technically sound in his guitar playing, and his singing captures the essence of the blues. Stop reading and buy this album." Nice blues CD A.Reader1 | Canada | 02/14/2010 (4 out of 5 stars) "I was fortunate to see Dave Thompson at the Ottawa Bluesfest. He was really ripping that day! This CD captures what he sounds like live.
I love the following tracks: Standing up on My Own, You Took My Baby (I wish I could play guitar like this - smokin'!), I'm Having It So Hard, I Don't Care What Nobody Says. However, the songwriting is inconsistent. Too many so-so songs on this CD hence the loss of 1 star." |
