Tav's billyrock, and all that mess

(4 out of 5 stars)
"Tav, that Memphis musicologist, mixes up another batch of spooky almost-had-it hits and echo-chambered obscurities whose titles tell the story. "What's Wrong," "My Mind Was Messed Up At the Time," "Torture," "I'm Gonna Dig Myself a Hole." But the real star is Tav's own alter ego, Eugene Baffle, whose four songs here (including "Vampire From Havana" and "Autosapien" --"you can't tell the man/from his car") describe some other dimension of weirdness. This collection isn't as consistently satisfying as "The World We Knew," his 1987 five-star collaboration with Alex Chilton, but it's a great companion piece."
