CD Reviews

Great example of Leon's piano style
Rex E. Pate | Spring, Tx | 08/03/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I'm a singer-songwriter-piano player and Leon Russell has always been my favorite piano man. This CD is a great example of his style of playing. He has always combined rock and roll with a black gospel feel and seasoned it with a little country & saloon. A dash of jazz & blues and you got the Leon gumbo. Only Leon has the exact recipe and this CD is a good place to get some. I don't know how old he is now but I'm glad he's still crankin' out creative stuff. His arranging skills are evident as always along with his sense of melody and rockin' sense of groove. Roger Linn, the master of the digital drum machine which changed the R&B, Hip-Hop, Rock and Dance world used to play guitar for Leon. Leon advised him on how to get the feel right by adding a little shuffle percentage to the hi hat and the Linn and MPC units changed the history of contemporary groove.

Leon still has that great sense of rhythm, that beautiful harmonic structure, that sweet melodic flow, and that power of rock. I'm frankly surprised how good it is. Some of the older artists are either repackaging their past hits or tossing out some stuff they think might sell a few copies, but this is one of the best instrumental piano albums I've ever heard. God bless Leon Russell and long live the king."

"No doubt Leon is an awesome piano player. Blind Lemon Cream makes me want to listen to the CD all the time. While its not the greatest CD in the world there are not many musicians that can pull off a CD without singing and lots of help from the rest of a band. Go Leon!!!!"
Drum machines, sythesizers, and boredom
Music Police | Mass | 01/15/2010
(1 out of 5 stars)

"This album absolutely stinks. Uninspired songs, lots of crappy drum machines, and weenie synthesizers. Leon Russell is obviously capable of making a great instrumental piano album. He took the lazy way out. Some cuts may be good enough for background music on the weather channel, but that's about it. What a disappointment."
