Smooth, groovy and atmospheric

"Wonderful compilation of studio tracks (NOT live) recorded in Stockholm by various mainstream jazz ensembles of Gullin's, from quartets to octets. Gullin really swings, his own compositions are excellent (plus there are 4 standards out of the 17 tracks) and the fine arrangements for the fine musicians are all smooth and tight. The quality of sound is superb - only the swishy tinge on the cymbals and high hat give away the age of the recordings, otherwise very warm and realistic.
The swinging dance hall sound and the more intimate club-style numbers are generally more romantic than cutting edge be-bop. Sometimes reminds me a little of Art Pepper. Very attractive stuff indeed - lovers of jazz from this era shouldn't be disappointed."
