Synopsis

Pinecastle Records makes a particularly wise choice by unearthing this 1981 gem from the Webco vaults, originally released under the title Sweet Sunny South. Larry Stephenson's high and smooth lead vocals (à la Bobby Osborne) and sturdy mandolin picking lead the way through a well-chosen set of material, which includes everything from bluegrass standards like the traditional "Sweet Sunny South" and the Osborne Brothers' "Big Spike Hammer" to midcentury country songs like Buddy Starcher's "Sweet Thing," Don Gibson's hit "Sea of Heartbreak," and the Louvin-penned, Osborne-covered "Give This Message to Your Heart." Add a passionate reading of the Platters' "Only You" and a romp through John Prine's "Paradise," and you have an eclectic repertoire delivered with precise picking and impeccable harmonies, the latter courtesy of Don Parmley and son David. --Marc Greilsamer

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Larry Stephenson is a skilled musician and vocal treasure. This album really starts out with a bang on the title track "Sweet Sunny South." It's an upbeat happy number that will have you kickin and singing along. "Paradise" is another great tune I remember so well from Jim and Jesse's live shows. The album is really a plus because the song selections are versatile, and his distinct tenor voice pierces the heart. Larry does an awesome job on the country classic "sea of heartbreak," the rythem and the arrangement is great. Although Stephenson is not my top favorites of bluegrass music, I like listening to him because of his distinct sound. The instrumental work is good as well, this is really a charming album. "Big Spike Hammer" is another one of my favorites. As long as you like the artists, Webco always has a good pick of songs. Pick this album up!"
