CD Reviews

Who in the world is Lancaster County Prison?!

(5 out of 5 stars)

"I'm sure that most of you have never heard of them, but LCP is a very talented, if somewhat odd, band. If you managed to come across this review, you are probably somewhat interested in punk, country, bluegrass, slamgrass, celtic, or something a little off-kilter. I guess the best way to describe them would to be a celtic country punk band. It seems like today's counter-cluture music scene is horribly cluttered with "fusion" bands that attempt to combine completly different styles of music in an effort to display their own uniqueness. Most of these bands fail, because the market for this type of innovation is pretty cluttered. A lot of it was started with Bela Fleck introducing folk and bluegrass to jazz music. But there is something rather interesting about these guys. Their sound isn't all that different. Just think of what it would sound like if you played the Drop Kick Murphies on top of The Clash or Sex Pistols, with some classic folk banjo thrown in for good measure. Okay, I guess they are pretty different.Or maybe it is their excessive and pround abilities to comsume large amounts of alcohol and still make decent (and often hillarious) music. Maybe this just reminds me of some of those drunken basement punk parties that I stumbled my way into in the college years - and that is more than enough reason to listen to them. This studio album is their 3rd studio outing (I think). It is very, very good. The sound quality doesn't sound like your average no-name punk band CD - it is mixed very well, while still keeping the raw power of the music in tact. Some of the greatest songs are Scotland The Brave (a traditional Scottish bagpipe tune that LCP gave a boot in the ass), Patriot Games, Rising Of The Moon, The Song, Delta Dawn, and the list goes on and on. I really can't say that there is a single song on here that I don't like. Keep in mind that if you have heard LCP live, this studio effort isn't quite as frenzied (or drunk, for that matter), but it is a great place to start. Next I suggest getting their Live At The Villiage Idiot album - it demonstrates another side of their musical prowess."
