"This is Rossini's operatic account of the Cinderella story. On this 70's recording, mezzo soprano Agnes Baltsa sings the title role with exuberance, a big voice and a lot of beauty, though she lacks the more comedic interpretations of both Teresa Berganza and Cecilia Bartoli, voices tailor-made for this type of opera. Baltsa sings the role as if she were a romantic bel canto heroine and even has dramatic touches to her performance. It is still a great performance and on recording sounds wonderful. If you're a devotee of Miss Baltsa and her style, you'll love it. I didn't know she was capable of singing in this florid style. She is supported by baritone Ruggero Raimondi as Don Magnifico (Prince Charming). Raimondi can always be counted on to sing with excellent Italian diction, darkness and beauty of bass register. A supremely brilliant production."
