"Both very interesting compilation and a marvellous performance by Andras Schiff. After listening to Kreisleriana, which is one of the Schumann's greatest masterpieces to my mind, you can enter the world of his less known pieces, like Nachtstucke (Nocturnes), Gesange der Fruhe and, of course, "The Ghost Variations", which was almost never recorded. The Variations is one of the last pieces written down by Schumann (if not the last one), and thus we can make a glance into it's inner world close to the end if his life full of sufferings and struggle.
The performance is excellent. It is very intimate and it gives a close picture of Schumann's nature. Andras Schiff presents here as a real singer of a wonderful music. The interpretation answers all the technical and lyrical demands, it's both passionate, well-controlled and wise.
I recommend this CD for each Schumann lover. By the way, it's a very good supplement to another Schumann's CD with Andras Schiff, presenting DavidsBundler Dances and Symphonic Etudes."
